
Getting Your PCB Curing Right with Gallium Iodide Lamps
If you’ve spent any time in PCB manufacturing, you know the drill. Curing photoresists and solder masks is a balancing act. You need a UV wavelength that’s just right—strong enough to trigger polymerization, but not so aggressive that it ruins the substrate. That’s why we use Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps. Standard mercury lamps just don’t always cut it. GaI shifts the light toward the UV-V and UV-A bands. A Word of Caution: The Heat
Now, there is a trade-off. GaI lamps runhot. Because they pack so much energy into a small space to keep your line moving fast, they throw off a lot of infrared heat. You can’t ignore this. If your cooling fans or chilled water jackets aren’t up to the task, your PCBs might warp or the laminate could suffer thermal stress. Ventilation isn’t just a “nice to have” here. It’s a must. If you keep the lamps cool, they last longer. It’s as simple as that.
