
Getting Your Textile Curing Right with Gallium Iodide Lamps
If you’ve ever dealt with ink that feels tacky to the touch or peels off a shirt after one wash, you know the frustration. Usually, it’s because the UV light didn’t actually get into the ink—it just scorched the surface. That’s where our Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps come in. Unlike those standard mercury lamps you see everywhere, GaI lamps push their energy into the UV-A and visible range. Think of it as a deeper reach. Instead of just hitting the top layer, the light sinks deep into thick ink and fabric fibers. No more “skinning” where the top looks dry but the bottom is still wet. The technical side (kept simple) The secret is the Gallium Iodide halide filling. It creates a big spike of energy around 400nm to 450nm. We build these for high power density because, in the textile world, if the energy doesn’t penetrate the fabric, it’s useless. But here is a heads-up: these lamps put out a lot of heat. You’ll want to double-check your conveyor’s cooling system. If your airflow is lagging, you might end up scorching your fabric before the ink even has a chance to cure. It’s a balancing act. Built to actually fit We use high-purity fused quartz glass so the UV light doesn’t get trapped inside the bulb. We also toughened up the electrodes. Why? Because we know you’re probably turning these things on and off all day. That kind of thermal cycling kills cheap lamps, but ours are built to take the hit. And don’t worry about your current setup. Whether your curing tunnel is wide, narrow, or some weird custom size, we’ve got the lengths and end-caps to match. They’re designed to be drop-in replacements. You just swap them out—no need to spend your afternoon messing with wiring or modifying lamp holders. Why this matters for your prints At the end of the day, you just want a bond that doesn’t crack. GaI lamps talk to the photoinitiators in your ink much better than short-wave UV does. It cures the ink from the bottom up. You’ll notice this most on dark fabrics. Dark dyes are notorious for absorbing UV light and blocking it. The GaI spectrum pushes right through that barrier, getting deep into the substrate. The result? A clean, professional finish that feels right and stays put.
